About Us
Our Mission
We train dancers to have a strong foundation of technique, and to use the artistry of dance as worship. We mentor our students in their faith, and provide a close Christian community for them to grow and learn alongside.
Steps of Faith exists to bring honor and glory to God in every part of the school; through our teaching, the relationships we build, the way we dance and how we live our lives.
How We Got Started
Mrs. Elliott grew up dancing in a secular setting where “self perfection” and fame is the end goal… But when Jesus got a hold of her heart everything changed. In 2010 she felt a call from the Lord to teach ballet lessons, but as she began taking the steps to answer that call, she thought that her own efforts and skills were enough to bring many students together and please God. She and her husband put a lot of effort into starting a school… but no one came.
In a state of absolute discouragement, she gave up and had no intention of trying again. But when the Lord begins a good work in us, he carries it through to completion, and he called her again to teach ballet lessons. This time Mrs. Elliott answered the call with humility, a bit more hesitancy and the full knowledge that her skills and effort alone was NOT enough to please God and bring dancers together. She submitted herself and all the hopes of this school to Him. Not long after this, a few little girls were gathered in the Elliott’s basement ready to learn ballet. It has been many years since that first dance class in the basement, and God has been so faithful to this school and the people he’s using to build it. He reminds us time and time again that unless the Lord builds the house, he who labors, labors in vain.
This school belongs to him, has been built by him. and is for his glory! We’re so blessed that from 2010, until the day the Lord stops calling us to dance, all we have to do to be part of his work, is take little “steps of faith” and he will do the rest.
How We View Dance
We believe dance is a powerful form of worship, art, & communication. Dance requires us to use every part of who we are: our minds, emotions, and body: right down to our fingertips. We have seen the culture around us twist the beauty of dance through the way modesty is disregarded, the way our bodies are both idolized and criticized; God’s perfect way of forming us becomes not good enough in pursuit of what we think is “perfection”. At Steps of Faith our goal is to dedicate our bodies, minds and hearts to the Lord through our dancing, taking our eyes off of ourselves & each other, and directing them towards Him.
The bible says:
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. ” ~ Romans 12:1
“Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre!”
~Psalm 149:3
